A brief history
You might recognize it as the Arbutus Tree — a symbol of strength, resilience and growth. For decades, it has represented a sense of place and belonging. It’s a reminder of where we’ve come from and the community that continues to grow here.
These retro designs aren’t just about nostalgia. They celebrate the legacy of VIU and all the names we’ve held along the way. Whether you were here in the days of:
- 1936 to 1971: Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Centre / B.C. Vocational School
- 1969 to 1988: Malaspina College
- 1988 to 2008: Malaspina University-College (MUC)
- 2008 to Present: Vancouver Island University (VIU)

Access Fund
The VIU Access Fund supports students who are facing financial challenges that may prevent them from continuing their studies. The fund provides financial assistance throughout the year – whenever students need it most.
